I really want to tell this story about how a client changed her home environment dramatically after just one 40-minute virtual organizing session. I received Sarah’s enquiry via my website requesting help with her cluttered studio. The problem in Sarah’s words: “I have severe anxiety and depression. The entire studio flat is a mess. My clean clothes are everywhere and shoes are also everywhere. I have space and storage I think, but just can't get around to tidy up, and do not use the existing space wisely. This makes the depression worse.” When I read this, my heart reached out to Sarah, as I know personally what it feels like to have anxiety. It can be crippling and constricting if not dealt with. Can you imagine living in a space that is also making you anxious? This is a common problem and so often overlooked. Fortunately, it can be solved with efficient space planning, decluttering and organization. Immediately I started analyzing her photos and videos of her studio, studying the layout, current furniture and storage options available. I always aim to use or repurpose what the client already has to be sustainable. From her video and commentary, it was clear that clothing storage was a big challenge as well as general visual clutter. This is not surprising in a studio flat, as there are no physical zones and often spaces can blend into each other. What was wonderful is that Sarah had a very specific goal of what she wanted to achieve in her session with me - “To not be tripping over things, to be able to clean properly and have one friend over for a meal or a tea.”
This is what I was focused on when I prepared her personalized action plan and 2D renderings of how certain spaces could look in her home. I wanted her to feel comfortable, empowered and have clear actionable steps to take immediately after our zoom session.
During our chat, I learnt all about how Sarah got to this place in her life, and why she really wanted to get her home decluttered and organized. We also went through the process of decluttering clothing items deciding what to donate and keep. It was great to see the progress happening live on the screen - my client didn’t want to stop once we got started!
To wrap up our session, I talked Sarah through product recommendations that are available locally that could help maximize the spaces she had; like skinny velvet hangers from Amazon, storage boxes for clothes like the SKUBB and STUK ranges from IKEA. Another one of my favorite furniture items is the KALLAX unit with DRONA boxes to hide visual clutter and odd shaped items like shoes, crafts, stationery and bags.

Shortly after finishing our zoom call, I sent Sarah her Virtual Organization Report for her reference. She replied saying that she was very close to canceling the session earlier that day due to her anxiety, but she was so pleased she hadn’t. She had also said she was nearly finished sorting through the pile of clothes we had started on during the call. This moment confirmed to me what I already knew, that there is power in knowing how to declutter and organize your home.
